Today Syncdocs went crazy. It recreated the public share folder on my computer and created 7 labels on my Google docs for it. Then it started moving my documents into the root folder which I removed. It also re-imported some of my spreadsheets as xls format messing up all the internal formatting. The damage was so bad I had no choice but to wipe the folder clean and recover everything from my nightly backups. This is the second time something like this has happened and I am beginning to think I should not be using sync docs for anything important.

The only reason I post this is because I really do love what the application does when it works.I would just like to see the sync docs team work less on extra features and really hammer down the core functionality. The danger of using the program is starting to out weigh the benefit for me. :(

Sorry about this.

Google had a big bug today. It caused all files to have no parent folders. Essentially all files were moved to the root.

They have fixed it now.

Thank you for let me know. It took a bit but I have managed to fix and verify everything. I do have another question though, is there anyway to get rid of the "Public Share" folder and the Help documents. I delete them but they always come back. The help docs are not a big deal but I really do not want a public share anywhere near that folder and wish this was optional.

To disable the shared folder, right click on Syncdocs icon, and select "preferences"
Click on the "General" tab, and uncheck "Enable shared folder and sharing right click menu"
(if you don't see a General tab, click the "Advanced Options" button)

Wow did that muck things up :( I sync two machines, home and work, and now I've got like three copies of everything and I can't even fix it because with both syncing the files just reduplicate themselves in the root again before I can clear it all out.

My only solution is to leave everything a mess, pause syncing at home, wait until I get to work, pause syncing there. In one place clean it all up, then start syncing at work fresh again, then come home and start it over there.

I may just use the manual syncing until I hear this is permanently fixed because I have lots of docs and this is just too painful to deal with again. I know that won't save me if I sync while the bug persists, but it should cut down the exposer to bugs like that because it's not doing so many syncs.

Indeed it makes me glad I keep 2 months of nightly backups both on and offsite.

We don't see it anymore. It was fixed by Google at 19:27 PST 16 August.

But from previous experience, it can take a few hours for a fix to propagate across all the servers in Google's data-centers around the world.

Right, I don't see it anymore on Google's site, but due to syncing two computers I run into a race condition described in the posts below that can only be fixed by disabling syncing on all computers, fixing one location, then enable syncing again.

I haven't tried the last suggestion of running syncdocs as admin yet, or increasing the 'sync time tolerance window' I think I read in another post, but mine is already at the 60 second default. Maybe they're both worth a try, anything to prevent this from happening again.

Hi,

What is the fix for this error? I now have a bunch of files in the root folder on my home computer. Do they need to be moved back to the correct folders on my home computer or can they just be deleted?

It looks like they were all duplicate files with new name that included the folder path appended to the file name. Looks like the duplicates from the root are in google docs also.

Any way to delete duplicates from Google docs?

Yes, you can delete duplicates on Google Docs using Syncdocs. Do it by clicking on the taskbar icon, and then selecting the free space item (something like "10% of 20GB used" ). Then click on the "Trash duplicates" button.

How come files keep showing up in my root directory? It seems they were same files that I had deleted.

@Jackal - I may be way off here but it is possible the re-emerging file issue that you are experiencing is related to a known bug with processing 'changes' (deletes/renames/moves) in directories referenced through junctions and/or symbolic links. No worries if that does not mean anything to you - junctions/symlinks are an obscure capability of some operating systems. Curious - what folder are referencing in Syncdocs preferences?

I will leave further investigation/resolution to the Syncdocs support team. Just wanted to toss out the junction/symlink angle.

Thanks Davey! The mirrored folder is on a 500 GB USB drive directly attached to my laptop computer. It shows up as drive "G:\" on my laptop.

Likely seen as a 'removable device' by Windows. I wonder if change notifications happen differently than with permanently attached devices ...

@jackal: Davey's right about the symlink problem. Even if you don't know what they are, Syncdocs can make them "under the hood".

Is your G: drive the main folder that you sync, or have you added it as a separate sync folder in Syncdocs?
