When I installed this, I assumed, because this is what syncing normally means, that it would sync data back and forth between my PC and google docs. But while it will copy and convert my documents and upload them to google docs, once they're there, any time I edit a document in Word on my PC, syncdocs simply overwrites it with the version in google docs. Is this a bug or is this designed this way? I've lost some work because of this, so I'm not happy about it.

Syncdocs syncs the latest version. If you're running Word to Google docs, your Word changes are merged into your Google doc. You can go back through the revision history to undo the changes.
If you're editing locally in Word, and someone edits the same file in Google, you have the option of accepting or rejecting changes.Posted 14 years ago # -
That's definitely not what's happening. Nothing I change in Word on my PC gets to the Google Docs version; instead the next time I open the document in Word it has reverted to the Google Docs version, so I had to disable the software.

Turn on revision marking in Word to see the changes.

Turning on revision marking worked, but this doesn't actually make any sense according to the documentation, which makes it sound like revision marking is designed so you can see changes in word you have made in google docs. But I was editing in Word, and then Google docs wasn't showing the changes, and after I turned revision marking on, I started seeing the changes in Google docs. The FAQ does say you can lose changes if revision marking is off and there are competing changes in Word and Google docs, but there were no competing changes; I hadn't edited the document in Google docs; ever. I'd just let syncdocs upload it.
To me this seems like either a bug (since the behavior is not accurately described in the FAQ) or a mistake in how defaults are set, as one would assume changes in Word would be reflected automatically in Google Docs by default (and visa verse) rather than only if you change the settings.
Thank you very much for resolving the problem.

Just noticed the same problem, with a file other than DOC, XLS, or other standard Document file. It's an FDX file (Final Draft). I had it open, worked on it, then when I wanted to save it, it told me that something is using my file, so I have to save it to another location. Saved the file, then I noticed that my original was deleted from the folder. I thought, hey, maybe I'll enable version control for all file types.
That didn't help. I copied the file back into the original location and continued working on it. I saved it, closed it, reopened it and saw, that it was the OLD version!I am forced to disable the software until you release a new version, where this doesn't happen.
Thanks

@tdavid: is the .fdx file in Word format? The original file will be either in the OroginalsBackup folder or the recycle bin. What I guess is happening is that your PC clock is slow, meaning your changes are "older" than the version on Google. Syncdocs tries to do a time-sync, but does not always have permission, you can double click on the system tray clock to sync PC and Google times.

Hi Phil,
Thanks for the quick reply.
FDX is not a Word format, but a file generated by another software. It's not really the point. The same issue keeps happening with other files as well. Hmmm... how do you sync your PC, with Google? And why should I? Not sure how Jungledisk does syncing, but I've never ran into this kind of problem, for syncing files.
Perhaps a file, if open, shouldn't be synced. That might eliminate my problem. Can you build in a switch for that? Thanks

Hi Phil,
Another time related issue. I've set Syncdocs to manual syncing, until a bugfix comes out. I've deleted a few files from the local folder and did a manual sync. Instead of deleting the needed files, the software downloaded them again from Google docs.
At this point the software is not usable. :(

Hi David,
From the symptoms you are seeing, it sounds like there is a permissions problem with Syncdocs not having permissions to access files or see changes. The easiest way to check this is the "Run syncdocs as Admin" option from the Start Menu->Syncdocs group.

Hi Phil,
Running Xp Pro, logged in as Administrator, installed the software as administrator. No file access issues should come up. Also, if this was a file read/write issue, the software should have been creating a copy of the file with the indication of some conflict, NOT delete or redownload them.
Also, where is the log file in the software, to show what exactly the software did?
Not sure how, but this issue needs to be addressed somehow. Right now, I am not able to use the software, as I am afraid to lose my work.
I had another question before: " how do you sync your PC, with Google? And why should I? "
Thanks

Hi David,
If you look in Syncdocs->Preferences->Sync is the option "sync renames and deletions too" checked?
Posted 14 years ago # -
Hi Phil,
Yes it is. Naturally, I want deletions and renames to be synced from local to google docs.

Hi David,
Sorry - I just needed to check the obvious. Are these files shared with you? It may be that you have no permission on Google to change them, in which case Syncdocs makes a copy of the changed file.
If they are not shared, you can try resetting your settings in Preferences->Advanced->Default. This will also clear the caches.

Hi Phil,
I've noticed the file change verification and time difference dropdown in Preferences, thanks. :)
All google docs files are mine, not shared to me.
I'll give the software another spin now, but keep a copy of the sync folder, just in case. :)
If anything comes up, I'll post it. Thanks for your help.

Running xp home. Where do I access this "Start Menu->Syncdocs group" to enable me to view the "Run syncdocs as Admin" and where are ready directions for using this? Thanks Guys

Hi guys,
You can't run something as Admin in XP. At least, I've been logging into XP as admin, so no such option is available. This option is available in Vista and Windows 7 I believe.
I've updated my software and made sure that my windows can do a time sync. Everything looks good so far.
