How to Open Google Files in SyncDocs Folder

When I was using the Google Drive app, if I viewed Google Files (Docs, Spreadsheets, etc), it would display the Google Doc icon for that file. If I Double Click on the file, it would open the file in Google Docs in my browser.

In my SyncDocs folder the Google Files display with no icon (just the plain white paper icon). If I double click them, the 'Open With' box comes up. I tried to select Chrome to open it, but then it downloads a zip file.

How can I have those Google Files in my SycnDocs folders open in Google Docs in my browser?

Syncdocs downloads and converts Google file formats to Microsoft or Open Office format, so you'll need one of these applications to open it locally via the double click. You can download the free Open Office suite from here or the best free version from https://www.libreoffice.org/

Google Drive app does not actually download these files, but stores a shortcut with a web address, to open the file in your web browser. Google Drive app does not store the Office suite files locally, just a link.

Is there a way to replicate the Google Drive client behavior of opening the Google file formats in the browser?

(I'm trying Syncdocs because our company IT policy prevents installing the Google Drive client on company laptops, but I would love to have as much of the functionality as possible)

Yes, Syncdocs can open Google file formats in the browser.

To enable this, click on Preferences, then the File Tab and then Un-check "Convert Google Docs to Office format on download"

Then Syncdocs will not download these files, but create a link to the file online.

Hi Andrew, thanks very much. I already have this setting disabled. However, Syncdocs's behavior varies:
- Sometimes the file is still stored as a Word doc
- Sometimes it is stored as a gdoc link (the behavior I want)
- In the case of Drive shortcuts to Google Docs or Google Sheets, it is stored as an empty file with no extension.

Thanks for the screenshot. The reason a file is stored locally as a Word doc is probably that there is already a Word file locally. In this case, Syncdocs will keep doing the conversion.

However, the "LetsDream..." file should have converted to either a .gdoc or Word file. It is odd that it has no extension. Is there something unusual about this file?

Dang, looks like I'll have to unsync and resync everything then. OK.

As for the LetzDream file, it is a Drive shortcut to a file in someone else's Google Drive, as per the new Google sharing model: https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/g-suite/simplifying-google-drives-folder-structure-and-sharing-models. I am seeing these empty files locally for every Drive shortcut in my Drive that I check.
