New beta version of Syncdocs

We're happy to announce a new version of Syncdocs.

We've made major improvements to the core sync engine to make use of new Google features.

This means that syncing is much faster, especially for those with tens of thousands of files, and for users who sync multiple machines to the same account.

We've also fixed many small bugs, and two big ones:
- Google 403 server errors are handled faster
- Scheduled syncs not starting is fixed

The beta is available for download here.

We've just put it through 3 weeks of extensive testing, but it may still have some bugs, so don't use it for mission critical purposes.

As usual, the beta has no file quota restrictions.

first impression is way faster!
Takes only seconds for my changes to synch up now. It took minutes before.

There's a new beta version 1.46 out:

We've fixed a few bugs:
- deleting a folder on Google forever after deleting it normally from another account works fine now
- new format Google presentations sync
- Google fusion tables are now ignored. There is still no Google API export.
- uploads slightly faster

When will SyncDocs move to operating system transparency (so to speak), Mac OSX without third-party add-ons in particular? I would think this would be a compelling move to stay competitive in the expanding sync market.

I believe this bug is associated with the latest release (1.46) as I have never seen it before. I have sync set for once per day; error popped when sync was scheduled to start. An 'unhandled exception' dialog was also displayed with additional details (too long to include in this post).

There is a new beta version 1.47:

- Fixed scheduler bug
- Fixed symbolic link and junction point changes not being seen
- Advanced setup options now accessible after setup before first sync

A couple comments on beta version 1.47:
- the fix for symbolic link and junction point changes did not work for me
- had to do a full uninstall of v1.46 as the repair option left the previous version in place (v1.46).

Your question prompted further testing which, unfortunately, was inconclusive.

The links in question are NTFS junctions (folder redirects). Originally I manually created links in the Syncdocs root directory. I since learned that Syncdocs also creates junctions when adding a folder under "Selctive Folder Sync". Very cool.

When a folder is first added to the sync list (typically via junction created by syncdocs) renames of items within that folder appear to propagate correctly. However, changing the name a second time usually triggers an upload of the newly renamed item and a download of the same item under its previous name. However, the behavior is not consistent. Sometimes a second and even third rename propagates correctly. Then, for reasons unknown, a local rename triggers the upload/download behavior describe above.

I will continue to test and report any new findings here.

Around 9:00 EST on Jan 17th change detection/processing began to work correctly. There was no defining event (no reboots, browser/explorer restarts, same version of Syncdocs, etc.). I have tried to duplicate the problem since without success. While I am quite happy things are looking up the unexplained change in behavior leaves me perplexed.

Anything happen on the Gdocs side?

nb: It sounds a lot like user/workstation error - which is probably is - just wish I knew what happened to better understand root cause and avoid reoccurrence :-o

Thanks for the feedback, Davey. I don't think there were any Google Docs changes. We're doing testing focusing on this area right now.

There's a new beta version 1.49

It has two new features:
1. sync resumes more reliably after hybrid sleep on Windows 7 on some systems.
2. ability to ignore files not in any collections (in Google root) from sync.

If you are running beta version 1.46, you will need to uninstall it first before installing this. Any other version of Syncdocs can just reinstall the newer version, no uninstall needed.

Thanks Davey, we've fixed the bug where deletions and renames are not detected before first sync on once a day or manual sync mode.

Although I suspect you are aware - version 1.50 did not address the change processing problem at Syncdocs start-up (at least in my case).

Hi Phil, Andrew etc,

Love the frequent beta releases, but would you be able to make a note on the download page as to which version we are up to?

Would make it a lot easier to work out whether I need to update my beta or not.

Great product and looking forward to continued development.

Right now we're on beta 1.50. This will be one of the last betas before the next version of Syncdocs is released, probably this week.

As you suggested, we'll also add a version link to the download page so you can see what version is current.
